Nobody Is Charged for Episode One
Free to download is what every short drama app in the major stores is, which is the first thing to understand about how they make money. Later, one unlock at a time, the revenue arrives from viewers already three cliffhangers deep before any price appeared. By Sensor Tower’s count, worldwide in-app revenue for the category ran about $750M in the first quarter of 2026, with full-year Don’t Miss Me When I’m Gone 2025 around $2.8–3B. Coins, passes and memberships sold inside free apps are where it came from. None of the mechanics is hidden, but they sit across a store listing, a purchase sheet and an unlock prompt you are in no mood to read. What follows is a walk through all three, using figures the companies publish for themselves.
What a Free Episode Really Is
The free block opening a series is a sampler with a deliberate edge. ReelShort is the only major app that publishes a number: the blog says the first 5 to 15 episodes are usually free, while TheWrap reported the first eight in 2024. For most apps the count is not published, so any number you read elsewhere is a third-party estimate. People look this up as is reel short free, and the answer there and elsewhere is the same: partly, and only at the start. Episodes run one to two minutes and a series can hold 20 to 100, so fifteen free ones may amount to twenty minutes of a four-hour story. The free block exists to get you invested, not to get you finished.
How the Coin Economy Works
Coins are scrip. You pay money for them, the app prices episodes in them, and the company sets the rate between the two. The ReelShort blog puts an episode at about 60 coins and lists packs at $4.99 for 500 coins, $9.99 for 1,000 plus 150 bonus, $14.99 for 1,500 plus 300 and $29.99 for 3,000 plus 750. The GoodShort US App Store listing runs $4.99 to $24.99 for 500 to 2,500 coins, so a coin’s entry price is close across two unrelated publishers. The pattern the packs are built around comes out of my arithmetic: at 60 coins an episode, 500 coins covers eight and strands 20, a remainder too small to spend on anything but more coins. One-time purchases on ShortMax run from $3.49 to $24.99 and My Drama coins from $4.99 to $24.99, yet neither publishes coins per pack, so no per-episode price can be worked out beforehand.
How to Earn Coins Instead of Buying Them
A free route is dangled by every app, and its terms repay a careful read. Over on ReelShort, one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes while a seven-day check-in streak earns 100 or more coins. Put the two together and a full week of check-ins buys under two episodes at the 60-coin rate. The ad route moves faster, but daily ad caps are not published, so how far it can carry you is unverified. Check-ins and ad unlocks are advertised by other apps too, without either the amounts or the caps being published. The intent is clear: earning works, and it is paced so that impatience is always the costlier option.
The Coins That Expire
Most of these apps hold two kinds of coins, and the two behave differently. ReelShort’s blog states the rule plainly, that free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. That makes every bonus a small deadline, a mechanic loyalty schemes have used for decades. The terms at My Drama forfeit coins after 12 months of account inactivity and state that coin purchases are final. Those same terms give EU and UK users a 14-day withdrawal right, which is law, not generosity. The rule that comes out of it is to spend earned coins first and to buy the large packs only once you are sure you will finish.
The Place the Paywall Lands
The product is where the paywall is placed. Episodes end on a reversal or a reveal every 60 to 120 seconds, and the unlock prompt lands on one of those rather than at a natural break. That ranks as the most common complaint about the category, alongside auto-renewing weekly passes and coin prices that seem to creep up. ShortMax’s App Store reviews carry both, objecting to episodes priced at up to 60 coins and to the absence of any up-front total for a series. No drama app puts that total in front of you before you start, which a cinema ticket always does. You are not deciding whether to spend $30 on a story, but rather deciding forty separate times to spend 60 coins on the next 90 seconds.
Passes, Memberships and the $19.99 Week
A time-based pass is the alternative to coins, and the industry has converged on one price. A pass on ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama costs about $19.99 a week in the US App Store, as of September 2026, and all of them renew automatically. Cheaper tiers run beside it: ShortMax lists a Weekly Pass Pro at $19.99 and $9.99, GoodShort’s weekly VIP starts near $5.99 and DramaWave’s at $7.99. DramaBox is built differently, with renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 and no statement of what each tier unlocks. In these listings the only verified monthly price is DramaWave’s, at $36.99. What matters is the interval, not the number: a weekly pass renews about 52 times a year and a monthly plan 12, and forgotten renewals cause most of the complaints. Prices shift with country, platform and promotion, and they change without notice.
All the Charging Models Side by Side
The table lays out models rather than apps, because most apps run several at once. Prices given are US App Store figures as of September 2026 and are a snapshot. Wherever it says unverified, the companies do not publish the figure and third-party guides are guessing. The coin arithmetic is mine, from the published pack sizes and ReelShort’s 60-coin episode. Nothing here recommends one model over another, because the cheapest depends on how fast you watch.
| Charging method | The way it works | Cost | The catch in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free opening episodes | The opening block unlocks free | Nothing | Only ReelShort publishes a count, 5 to 15; it ends mid-cliffhanger |
| Rewarded ads | Sit through an ad, unlock episodes | Time rather than money | ReelShort hands over two episodes per ad; daily caps unverified |
| The daily check-in | Open the app daily for coins | Nothing at all | A seven-day ReelShort streak gives 100+ coins, under two episodes |
| Packs of coins | Buy coins, spend about 60 an episode | ReelShort $4.99–$29.99; GoodShort $4.99–$24.99 (500–2,500 coins); ShortMax $3.49–$24.99; My Drama $4.99–$24.99 | Each pack leaves a remainder too small to spend |
| Weekly passes | All-access for seven days, auto-renewing | About $19.99 on ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama; lower tiers from about $5.99 | Renewal comes roughly 52 times a year until cancelled |
| Membership tiers | Several renewing plans running at once | DramaBox: $5.99, $17.99, $19.99 | Prices are shown in the listing, inclusions are not |
| A monthly plan | One renewal per month, not four | DramaWave at $36.99 | The only verified monthly price here, and it still auto-renews |
| Free app | The app says it charges nothing | Advertised as being free | GreatShort’s own store claim, which we have not verified |
How to Work Out What a Whole Series Costs
No app publishes what finishing a series costs, and any article handing you a figure has estimated it. You can work it out yourself in four steps. Start at the series page, note the episode count and subtract the free opening block, using ReelShort’s 5 to 15 where no number is given. Take what remains and multiply it by the coin price in the unlock prompt, around 60 where it is published, then convert it into dollars at the pack you would realistically buy. Then do the second calculation, because a pass is priced by time, not by episode: count the days you would need and set that against the weekly figure. The two totals rarely end up close, and which wins depends on how fast you watch, which is why the apps sell both.
What the Design Is Really Doing
Take the mechanics together and a shape emerges. The free block is sized to create investment, the packs to leave a remainder, the reward coins to expire, while the pass is sold in the shortest interval a store will bill over and over. None of it is deceptive on its own, and all of it is disclosed somewhere. The habits that help are unglamorous: read the in-app purchase list before you install, screenshot the price sheet, and keep in mind that deleting an app never cancels a subscription, which happens in store settings instead. Give a wide berth to anything promising unlimited coins, modded versions or coin generators, because those are unofficial and unsafe rather than smart. Watch carefully and short dramas can cost nothing at all for weeks. Left on autopilot in 2026, one forgotten weekly pass silently outspends a mainstream streaming subscription several times over.
